Carillion said it had bagged 180m pounds worth of highway contracts in recent weeks including a 70m pound deal to upgrade another section of the M6.Under the contract, the FTSE 250 support services company will transform the M6 between junctions 10A and 13 in the West Midlands into a so-called smart motorway which use a range of technologies and new operating procedures to control the flow of traffic. The firm is also part of a joint venture that has been picked by Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council as the preferred bidder to design and build the A6 Manchester Airport Relief Road. It said its share of the £100m contract would be some £50m. In addition, Carillion had been awarded a clutch of smaller contracts including a 12-month contract for Northumberland County Council to build the £25m Morpeth Northern bypass and a £16m 20-month contract for Leeds City Council for the maintenance of the A58 Woodhouse Tunnel.It had already included £80m of the £180m orders announced within the probable orders that were highlighted in its half year results in August. The remaining £100m had been classified as pipeline opportunities. Shares in Carillion were up 1% at 307p at 11:25 on Friday. TB
