Mobile phone giant Vodafone is to launch a customised version of Opera, the popular Internet browser, to run on low-cost handsets on 2G networks in a move aimed at developing markets.Vodafone has worked alongside Opera Software to develop an enhanced version of Opera Mini 5 which, through data compression technology, is able to give a good internet experience on lower- to mid-tier handsets connected to second generation networks.The initiative is initially being marketed in India, South Africa, Turkey, Tanzania and Egypt, with other markets expected to follow in the near future.The innovative Opera browser, which pioneered many features now used by other browsers such as tabbed browsing, saved sessions and mouse gestures, is developed by Norwegian company Opera Software ASA.
