Vodafone has paid £1.74bn for 3G spectrum in India. The mobile networks oeprator acquired 2x5 MHz of 3G spectrum in 9 circles in the Indian auction. The area, which includes Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata, covers more than half of India's population. It also covers two-thirds of the existing revenue generating area of Vodafone Essar. The customer base in India exceeds 100m people. India is highly competitive and Vodafone wrote-down its Indian assets by £2.3bn in the year to March 2010. Vodafone is number two in the Indian market based on revenues.
