MELBOURNE (Dow Jones)--Vodafone Hutchison Australia, or VHA, said Monday it has appointed L.M. Ericsson Telephone Co. (ERIC) to undertake a major upgrade of its mobile phone transmission network in Australia. VHA, a joint venture between Vodafone Group Plc (VOD.LN) and Hutchison Telecommunications Australia Ltd. (HTA.AU), said Ericsson would be manager of a project to upgrade and build the transmission network by deploying thousands of upgraded microwave radio and optical fiber links across Australia. "We're seeing dramatic growth in our mobile broadband business and a powerful and reliable transmission network with the capacity to meet future demand is essential to deliver the best possible customer experience," VHA Chief Executive Nigel Dews said in a statement. - By Alex Wilson, Dow Jones Newswires: 613-9292-2094; [email protected] (END) Dow Jones Newswires July 18, 2010 20:26 ET (00:26 GMT)
