(Sharecast News) - The US military is reportedly deploying thousands of additional marines and sailors to the Middle East, heightening fears of an escalation of the conflict with Iran.

Several media outlets reported that the amphibious assault ship USS Boxer, with the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit aboard, was leaving the US about three weeks ahead of schedule.

A US Navy spokesperson said the deployment to the Indo-Pacific was routine training" that ensures the continued war-fighting readiness of Navy and Marine forces operating in the area" NBC news reported

With no real end to US President Donald Trump's war against Iran in sight and attacks by Tehran on the oil and gas infrastructure of neighbouring states, concerns are increasing about the likelihood of an extended military operation, despite claims from Washington that objectives had largely been achieved.

Israeli and US officials have said their three weeks of airstrikes have decimated Iran's military but the Pentagon has requested another $200bn to fund the war, which would need congressional approval.

Trump was reportedly considering sending troops to secure Iran's key Kharg Island which is a major oil and gas processing hub.
