Unilever snaps up Russian beauty group

Consumer goods giant Unilever has strengthened its position in emerging markets with the acquisition of Russian beauty company Concern Kalina for RUB21.5bn (£440m).Kalina's main markets are Russia, Ukraine and Kazakhstan. It employs about 1,900 people.Unilever said Concern's brands such as Silky Hands and Forest Balm will complement its own portfolio, which includes Dove soap and Timotei shampoo."This will transform Unilever's personal care business in Russia, giving us leading positions in skin care and hair care, as well as establishing a presence in oral care," Unilever chief executive Paul Polman said."It will also strengthen and re-balance Unilever's portfolio and competitive position in Russia, an emerging market with considerable potential and one of our priority countries."---RG
