Tullow Oil has announced that the first exploration well at its PL 507 project in the North Sea offshore Norway has come up dry.Tullow Oil Norge's Lupus well (31/10-1) failed to encounter hydrocarbons and will now be plugged and abandoned. The wildcat well is 35km south-east of the Oseberg Sør Field and 110km west of the island of Sotra in the North Sea.Tullow explained that Lupus-1's purpose was to find hydrocarbons in the Paleocene Hermod Formation in a stratigraphic trap. The well also targeted reservoir quality sandstones of the Paleocene Ty Formation of the Rogaland Group. While good quality sandstones were found in the Paleocene Hermod Formation, no hydrocarbons were encountered. Meanwhile, no sandstones were found in the Paleocene Ty Formation. "The well will now be plugged and abandoned and well data gained will be used to calibrate geological and geophysical uncertainties and reduce risks in future exploration wells."BC
