Qatar Telecom Faces Fine, Legal Action Over Virgin Mobile Service - Reuters

DOW JONES NEWSWIRES Qatar Telecom (QTEL.DO) faces a fine and potential legal action over violations during the launch of Virgin Mobile in the country, the Reuters news agency reported, citing a ruling from the telecoms regulator. "Qtel should be compelled to pay an appropriate fine for its unlawful actions during the period from 13 to 18 May 2010 and has referred this matter to the Office of the Attorney General for assessment of an appropriate penalty," the regulator said in a ruling made public on Sunday, according to Reuters. In May, Qtel launched Virgin Mobile Qatar as a prepaid service, the report said. Vodafone Qatar Q.S.C (VFQS.DO), which has license rights in Qatar, said Virgin Mobile's entry into the Gulf state was a violation of its license conditions and saw the new service as a third service provider. Vodafone is considering options in relation to the ruling, Reuters said on its web site.
