Miners are moving higher on the back of rising metal prices but they can't stop the Footsie falling slightly on the day. Even Rio Tinto shares are rising following the miner's attempts to distance itself from executive Stern Hu, who was sentenced to 12 years in jail in China on charges of bribery and commercial espionage. Reports said Mr Hu apologised to the court and to Rio, saying he took more than $900,000. Three other Rio employees also received heavy sentences.Shares in Vodafone have perked up because of reports that the mobile phone giant might be near to an agreement about the future of its US joint venture Verizon Wireless. This could involve a merger or a release of cash by the joint venture. BSkyB is lower after UBS cut its recommendation on the shares of the satellite broadcaster from buy to neutral ahead of Ofcom's pay-TV review tomorrow. Financials are dragging down the Footsie with Royal Bank of Scotland and Lloyds Banking both lower.
