(Sharecast News) - London's FTSE 100 was down 1.3% at 10,198.20 in afternoon trade on Wednesday.
GSK was under the cosh despite posting above-forecast first-quarter profit, boosted by robust demand for its specialist HIV and oncology drugs.
St James's Place lost ground as it reported a drop in first-quarter funds under management, citing a decline in global markets.

DCC surged to the top of the index as the sales, marketing and support services group confirmed it had received a cash takeover proposal from US investment firms Energy Capital Partners and KKR.
"The board of DCC is evaluating the proposal together with its advisers and a further announcement will be made in due course," it said. It added that there can be no certainty that any firm offer will be made, nor as to the terms on which any firm offer might be made.
Under UK takeover rules, the consortium has until 1700 BST on 10 June to either announce a firm intention to make an offer or walk away.
