A Balfour Beatty joint venture has won the £235m Whitechapel and Liverpool Street Station tunnels contract, which forms part of the huge Crossrail project. The infrastructure group has teamed up with Austria's Alpine BeMo Tunnelling, Morgan Sindall and Vinci Construction to do its bit of the new rail link that will eventually connect commuters east and west of London to the City, Canary Wharf, the West End and Heathrow Airport. Balfour and Morgan Sindall, who each own about 30% of the JV, say the deal covers the construction of all station tunnels and associated works and forms an integral part of the wider project. Work is expected to begin next month and take about five years to complete.
