BAE cuts 1,300 jobs

Defence firm BAE has announced plans to cut more than 1,300 jobs in the UK following the government's spending review.The cuts, which will affect jobs at various sites where Nimrod spy planes and Harrier jets were assembled, including Farnborough in Hampshire and RAF Kinloss in the north of Scotland. 'This has regrettably led us to initiating consultation regarding potential job losses,' Kevin Taylor, managing director of BAE's Systems Military Air Solutions division, said, referring to the government's decision to terminate production of the two planes.'The announcement is designed to ensure we remain competitive as we actively pursue a number of opportunities for our other products and services both in the UK and internationally.'Union leaders blamed the coalition government for the job cuts.'This is a tragedy for the workforce and for Britain,' said Unite's Bernie Hamilton. 'The coalition Government's Christmas present to over a thousand skilled workers who support Britain's armed forces is the sack.'
