Anglo American beefs up board again

Anglo American has strengthened its management team again, with the appointment of former Barrick Gold vice chairman Jack Thompson as a non-executive director.Thompson, who begins immediately, will join Sir Philip Hampton, the former chairman of Sainsbury's and current chairman of Royal Bank of Scotland, following his appointment to a non-executive role last week. Fifty-nine-year-old Thompson was vice chairman at Barrick, the world's largest pure gold mining company, from 2001 to 2005, and also worked for Newmont Mining, another of the world's largest gold producers."He brings a wealth of experience gained at all levels of the mining industry and has received wide recognition as a mining engineer," said Anglo chairman Sir John Parker. "His extensive boardroom experience in executive and non-executive roles will strengthen and enrich our board."Parker said last week that the decision to hire Hampton was the first "in a series of appointments as we refresh the board".
