(Sharecast News) - Activist investor Corvex Management has called on Whitbread to hold a general meeting to vote on appointing Corvex partner James Gemmel to the Premier Inn owner's board, escalating pressure on the company over its strategy and capital allocation.

Corvex, which owns around 6.4% of Whitbread's ordinary shares and has an economic interest of roughly 7%, said it had spent the past year seeking to engage privately with the board.

The investor said it had become increasingly concerned about Whitbread's strategic direction, structural complexity and approach to capital allocation, arguing that its recent strategy review had failed to address underlying challenges.

Corvex said Whitbread had generated negative total shareholder returns of around 17% over the past decade and 22% over the past year, while materially underperforming peers and the wider market.

It is no longer calling for a sale of Whitbread, having pushed for one earlier this year, and said it was not seeking control of the company. Instead, it wants a single board seat and a "rigorous, fact-based review" of all credible strategic alternatives.

"Whitbread is a unique collection of assets anchored by the iconic Premier Inn brand with a leading market position," Corvex managing partner Keith Meister said.

"What has changed is our growing concern with the company's strategic direction, continued commitment to the status quo, and, in particular, the structural complexity of the business and its approach to capital allocation."

Whitbread shares were up 1.1% at 2,353p by 1404 BST.
