Week ahead: UK and US data barrage as results season lulls

Results season takes a bit of a break over the course of the week ahead, with only a handful of FTSE 350 companies unveiling their numbers, while traders will be absorbed with a raft of economic data on the east and west sides of the Atlantic and Monday's GDP figures from Japan. After new Bank of England Governor Mark Carney made his debut inflation report appearance this last week, the Monetary Policy's meeting minutes will be published on Wednesday 14th to allow market observers to decipher the Bank's thinking and potential future policy. There are several other UK releases due over the week with the potential to influence opinions on the country's recovery prospects, along with several important data releases in the US to boot. British data begins with the UK's main gauge of inflation with the consumer price index (CPI) figures and the influential RICS housing market survey on Tuesday, along with US retail sales, business and manufacturing inventories.Wednesday's MPC minutes excitement is followed by UK retail sales data the next day, but Thursday sees issues Stateside hold sway, with unveiling of data indications of consumer confidence, industrial production, consumer prices and initial jobless claims as well as Philly Fed guidance.Economists Investec opine that "all will be eyed closely for evidence on the US's continued recovery momentum as we edge closer to the Fed's September 18th decision on whether to taper QE3", while those at Northland Capital Partners have flagged possible market uncertainty on Wall Street, as they noted the US Vix volatility index hit multi-year lows, "often a precursor to market turbulence". In company news, the blue chips are quiet, with Resolution's interims on Tuesday and on Wednesday Kazakh miner ENRC puts out its last interims before it is taken private. Resources-hungry investors might find more productive interest in FTSE 250 oil and gas player EnQuest's interims on Tuesday - although broker Numis is "not expecting any significant surprises".
