Week Ahead: Standard Chartered, Debenhams, HMV

Hot on the heels of the release on Friday of the Bank of England's financial stability report and less than a week after the emergency Budget, emerging markets focused bank Standard Chartered releases a trading statement on Monday. It will be the first bank to report since the chancellor of the exchequer announced plans to slap a levy on banks and management may well comment on this. Most observers seem to think that the banks got off lighter than expected and the expectation is that bank bosses will quietly take their medicine.With the bank's heavy exposure to the Asia-Pacific region the management's view of China's decision to stop pegging its currency to the US dollar may also be of interest.Later in the week department store Debenhams issues an interim management statement and it too may include some commentary on the Budget, specifically the increase in VAT to 20% due to come into effect on 4 January. HMV, the favourite haunt of last minute present buyers, issues full year results on Wednesday. The shares are yielding an improbable 12.8%, suggesting that the market thinks the company will not be able to sustain that level of payments; HMV management thinks it can, while boosting dividend cover at the same time. Wednesday should reveal whether the market has got it right, or HMV.On the economic front, the big item this week is the US non-farm payrolls release for June, due out on Friday.
