Week Ahead: BP, Shell, BG, Glaxo, Astra

Oil and pharmaceuticals companies will dominate the company results scene next week, with BP, Royal Dutch Shell, BG Group, AstraZeneca and GlaxoSmithkline all set to give trading updates.Oil giant BP kicks off on Tuesday with third quarter figures, where net income is set to tumble to just over $3bn, analysts predict, from $8.9bn in the third quarter last year. Despite recovering throughout the year, oil prices are still not at the inflated levels seen last year, while gas prices have remained weak.BP's great rival, Royal Dutch Shell, issues third quarter results on Thursday and, according to broker Charles Stanley, its net income will top BP's. The broker is going for $3.2bn, down from $8bn last year.Oil and gas firm BG Group is also set to see third quarter post-tax profits fall, probably to around £450m, compared to £777m a year earlier. The company conceded at the half-year stage that there is a possibility it could fail to meet its full year production targets, so analysts will be keen to study third quarter output levels.Drugs giant GlaxoSmithkline should see third quarter revenues come in higher than in the corresponding period of last year, helped by favourable currency fluctuations.
