Builder and civil engineer North Midland Construction is more profitable in the first nine months of 2010 than it was in the same period last year despite pressure on margins. The highways and civil engineering businesses are both more profitable than last year even though the latter has generated lower revenues. Investment in broadband is helping the utilities business to grow its profit.A problem with a contract means that North Midland building will lose £250,000 this year. Nomenca has been hit by delays in investment by water companies. There are fewer tendering opportunities but the current order book for 2011 is worth £89m. The effect of the recent public sector spending review remains uncertain.
