German factory orders record unexpected surge

(Sharecast News) - Factory orders across Germany unexpectedly jumped by their most in nearly a year in November, according to the Federal Statistical Office, driven by a big increase in large-scale orders.

Price-adjusted new orders in manufacturing were 5.6% higher than the previous month after seasonal and calendar adjustments, Destatis reported, following a 1.6% gain in October.

This was far better than the 1.0% decline expected by analysts and the strongest rate of monthly growth since December 2024.

Germany saw solid demand across at home and overseas, with domestic factory orders up 6.5%, orders from within the eurozone up 8.2% and orders from outside the eurozone up 2.9%.

November's surge was largely a result of a 25.3% jump in the manufacture of fabricated metal products and a 12.3% increase in orders for transport equipment, such as aircraft, ships, trains and military vehicles.

Excluding large-scale orders, new orders were just 0.7% higher than the previous month.

According to Destatis, real turnovers across the manufacturing sector were up 2.7% in November, and 0.1% higher than November 2024.
