The mining sector suffered some heavy losses on Monday as concerns of the global economy weighed on sector sentiment, and metals prices.Centamin Egypt, Kenmare Resources, Aquarius Platinum, Petropavlovsk and Allied Gold Mining were among the worst performers on the FTSE 250. While the miners bore the brunt of today's mass sell-off, Phoenix Group was a stand-out performer in the afternoon, eclipsing stocks on the risers list which were registering just small gains.Resolution may have called an end to its talks with Phoenix Group, but the FTSE 250 company has assured that it has received a number of approaches from other parties, most notably private equity firm CVC Capital Partners. Phoenix rose an impressive 8.4%.Thomas Cook was the next in line, up 1.4%, despite reports that it is looking to close a further 125 high street travel agencies.Insurance firm Amlin fell lower after both UBS and Credit Suisse cut their respective target prices on the stock following last week's third quarter update. Both brokers retained their neutral ratings.MITIE, the facilities management company, fell after reporting a 5.8% rise in revenues in the six months to the end of September, compared to the equivalent period of 2010.
