Shares in electronics group CSR were given a lift as the UK takeover panel extended the deadline for US suitor Microchip Technology to complete its bid negotiations. The previous deadline of 25 September has now been pushed back to 15 October.Oil and gas group Cairn Energy was higher after announcing that it has entered into a farm-out agreement for the sale of a 10% interest in the Catcher development and adjacent acreage in the UK North Sea. The agreement with sector peer Dyas is in return for a 10% stake in five licences, including Catcher, on the UK Continental Shelf that will fund up to $182m-worth of Cairn's exploration and development costs.Engineer WS Atkins also saw its shares climb, with shareholders seemingly satisfied with a "mixed" first half compared to a strong prior year. The group said a robust rail performance offset difficulties elsewhere and meant, despite currency headwinds, its overall first-half performance is expected to be in line with expectations and the full year outlook remains unchanged.Meanwhile, pub and restaurant operator Mitchells & Butlers led the fallers with a disappointing latest trading update. Like-for-like sales rose 0.6% over the period, while the group said its pub division had encountered difficult trading conditions in August, due to exceptionally high rainfall for the season.Miners also dragged the downside amid weaker commodity prices, with Ferrexpo, Lonmin, Polymetal International,Evraz and Vedanta Resources all firmly in the red.
