Randgold Resources was the strongest riser after it said quarter-on-quarter profit increased 80 per cent following a strong performance by its flagship Loulo-Gounkoto complex in Mali. The group said gold sales increased to $348.7m from $318.3m a year earlier as the average gold price received per ounce fell to $1,327 from $1,633.Coca-Cola HBC was higher despite posting declines in its third quarter. The group was able to deliver margin improvements at both the comparable gross profit and earnings before interest and tax level in the three-month period, however. Meggitt was rising as sentiment recovers following a forecast downgrade, which led to a sharp drop in the share price last week. A purchase by Chief Financial Officer Doug Webb of 15,000 shares helped move the share price in the right direction.Power systems group Rolls-Royce was trading higher after winning a contract extension with the US Department of Defence to provide its 'MissionCare' services for the F405 (Adour) engines that power the US Navy's T-45 training aircraft. Investors at defence contractor BAE Systems continued to celebrate the company's plans to cut 1,775 jobs at its shipbuilding yards in Scotland and England. Meanwhile, Schroders fell as investors cashed in strong gains seen in the share price over the past year (around 65%). The group today reported a sharp rise in third quarter profits helped by its recent acquisition of Cazenove Capital. The fund manager said pre-tax profits rose to £106.2m in the three months to the end of September from £88.6m in the same period last year on the back of revenues which rose to £366m from £276.5m.
