Energy firm Essar Energy is topping the risers, making a +5% gain as of Friday afternoon. Meanwhile, Cairn Energy is the heaviest faller, edging just 0.5% lower. Only five stocks are in the red, all recording minor losses.The miners are tracking metals prices higher. Antofagasta, Kazakhmys, Rio Tinto and Eurasian Natural Resources Corp are among the best performers.The consumer confidence index for the UK unexpectedly jumped in May, according to GfK, to -21 points, from -31 the month before. According to Nick Moon, managing director at GfK NOP Social Research, "May's figures show the second largest rise ever - only May 1993 was higher, when it improved by 12 points." Next, Kingfisher and Marks & Spencer are making headway on the blue chip index.The banking sector is in demand after positive comments from Citigroup. The US bank upped its rating on European banks to 'overweight', saying that the recent decline in the share prices provides a good entry level and the risk-to-reward ratios are more positive than three months ago.
