(ShareCast News) - After a strong start to the day, the FTSE drastically dropped back to 6,080.75 mid-afternoon, up 8.28 points (0.14%).Shares in banks were the big winners of the day after news the Financial Conduct Authority is considering a deadline of spring 2018 for any final payment protection insurance claims being lodged. Standard Chartered led the top 10 risers, with Lloyds also having substantial gains.The market also reacted positively to news that Legal & General America will provide retirement payments under a group annuity contract to 14,000 Royal Philips US retirees and other former employees. It is the company's first American pension risk transfer deal, with benefit payouts split equally between L&G and The Prudential Insurance Company of America. The news sent shares in both London branches up.And with gold climbing to previous levels and other precious metals rising, Randgold Resources also flourishedHowever Experian took a large hit after it was revealed the credit agency was hacked.
