FTSE 100 movers: BAE and Rolls-Royce boosted by Citigroup comments

BAE Systems and Rolls-Royce were today making gains after analysts at Citigroup said that they have a "positive outlook" on civil aerospace due to a ramp-up of new aircraft production and rising production of legacy aircraft.While the bank said it is still cautious on the wider defence sector, it said that the recent debt-ceiling deal has "removed some immediate risks overhanging US defence". Stocks exposed to the government defence outsourcing markets were in demand today, including Babcock, G4S and Smiths Group.London-based Charterhouse approached banks and its investors over financing a possible 1bn pound deal to buy G4S' cash-solutions business unit, according to three people familiar with the matter who asked not to be identified because the talks are private, Bloomberg reported. Mining group Vedanta climbed after it was widely reported that it plans to triple its aluminium capacity by 2015 to 2.3m tonnes, desite there being an alumina shortage, after demand from India surged. Meanwhile, Royal Bank of Scotland led the index lower on claims that the UK government was moving closer to breaking up RBS into a 'good' and 'bad' bank. Although the UK Treasury was still reviewing options for RBS, there was no chance the bank could be left in its current form, Osborne told The Daily Telegraph.Retailer Marks & Spencer shares were lower on the news the group's womenswear executive is set to exit the company. Gillian Ridley Whittle's departure will be a blow to the group, which is currently expecting to report its ninth consecutive quarterly decline in general merchandise sales.
