DS Smith is in confident mood in the run up to December's interim results, which the paper and plastic packaging firm thinks will be way ahead of last year as the "encouraging" overall trading in the first quarter continued into the second.Volumes continue to be "good", with "robust" growth at the paper and corrugated packaging businesses, and good volume growth and cost control at the plastics unit. "The year is progressing in line with expectations," said the group. "The half-year results are expected to show a strong improvement on the comparable period for last year.""We look forward to the remainder of the year with confidence due to our continued focus on FMCG (fast-moving consumer goods), and greater presence in Europe, with service, quality and innovation at the centre of our product offering."Results for the half-year to 31 October are due on 9 December.
