The correct version follows:) HOUSTON (Dow Jones)--Apache Corp. (APA) said Tuesday it has increased the amount of oil and gas production shut in the Gulf of Mexico due to Tropical Storm Alex. About 5,500 barrels of oil a day and 40 million cubic feet of natural gas are offline as of Tuesday afternoon, said Bob Dye, a spokesman for the Houston-based company. The independent oil and gas producer, which has most of its operations in the shallow water of the Gulf, also evacuated 130 workers from its offshore facilities. Another large Gulf oil and gas producer, BP PLC (BP), shut in production at its Atlantis, Mad Dog and Holstein platforms Monday. The company said it's bringing workers back to the platforms and that it expects to restore output as soon as practically possible. BP didn't specify the amount of production shut down. Chevron Corp. (CVX), Royal Dutch Shell (RDSA), Exxon Mobil Corp. (XOM) and ConocoPhillips (COP) have also shut down production ahead of the storm. Authorities issued hurricane warnings in Texas and northeastern Mexico as forecasters predicted that Tropical Storm Alex, now churning in the Gulf of Mexico, would reach hurricane force Tuesday.
