BT Sport has launched its Champions League and Europa League coverage and confirmed both competitions will be free to customers who take BT TV.The broadcaster, which has invested £897m to secure exclusive rights for European football's elite competition for the next three seasons, said customers who choose to watch on their Sky service, via the BT Sport App or on BT Mobile will be able to add the BT Sport Pack for £5 a month. However, BT TV subscribers will receive the full BT Sport Pack, which includes BT Sport 1, BT Sport 2, ESPN on BT Sport and the new BT Sport Europe channel, which launches on August 1, for free."When we launched BT Sport we promised to make televised football far more accessible and affordable than it has been to date," said John Petter, chief executive of BT Consumer."We have opened the market to millions of new customers and we want to build on that as BT Sport becomes the undisputed home of European football.BT will broadcast all the 351 games across the Champions League and the Europa League, while highlights of both competitions will be available on ITV."This is a new chapter for European football on TV," said Petter."BT Sport will show hundreds of live matches throughout the tournament using the very latest technology. Our presenters and experts will also provide the smartest insight and analysis."However, the broadcaster, which unveiled Gary Lineker, Rio Ferdinand, Glenn Hoddle as Steven Gerrard as the pundits for his Champions League coverage, came under criticism by its main rival.Sky Sport's managing director Barney Francis suggested that the Champions League was losing its appeal and that viewers were more interested in the Premier League."Over the last five seasons we have seen Champions League audiences fall 36%," Francis wrote in his blog."Last season we saw our lowest ever average match audience and not a single European game appeared in our top 40 football matches."In football, it's the intense rivalry of our domestic competitions that matters most to customers. You only have to look at the viewing figures to see the evidence."Once again, 49 of the top 50 most watched Premier League matches were on Sky Sports last season."
