Real estate giant British Land is pumping £50m into Meadowhall to refurbish the Yorkshire shopping centre as the retail destination celebrates its 25th birthday this year. The refurbishment, set to start in autumn 2015 and finish by the end of 2017, will create distinct districts within the centre, the company said.Meadowhall is the fourth-largest regional shopping centre in the UK and currently houses 310 shops. The 1.4m square-foot (sq) centre, located just outside Sheffield, has recently secured over 40,000sq of new lettings including footwear retailer Size? and Liam Gallagher's fashion brand Pretty Green."The refurbishment includes new way finding, mall seating and lighting as well as the installation of dramatic lighting artwork", and will enable some retailers to install double-height shop fronts, British Land added.Work will mostly take pace out of hours so as not to disrupt trade."Across the retail portfolio, we are investing in our assets to ensure they reflect the way people shop today," said Claire Barber, head of shopping centre asset management at British Land."The refurbishment of Meadowhall will reposition the centre to appeal to premium and lifestyle retailers as well as a broader range of customers. We are very excited about the future for Meadowhall and the experience this investment will create for both our customers and retailers."
