BHP shakes up leadership roles ahead of new CEO start

(Sharecast News) - Mining giant BHP Group has announced a series of leadership changes as incoming chief executive Brandon Craig shakes up management ahead of his official start in September.

As part of the changes, BHP is splitting the president of Americas role - previously held by Craig - into two, with a separate exec handling North and South America.

Jessica Farrell, the current vice president of innovation and former Western Australia nickel asset president, will take over as president of North America and temporarily look after South American operations until the company can find a permanent replacement.

Current chief operating officer Edgar Basto will be move to become chief enterprise performance officer, remaining responsible for health, safety and security, the BHP operating system, strengthening contractor safety and general operating discipline and performance.

Lastly, the president of Australian operations, Geraldine Slattery, will take over responsibility for copper assets in South Australia, bringing all of the country's operating assets together under her leadership.

"These new appointments ensure that we continue to build organisational capacity, with the right mix of skills, experience and perspectives to deliver BHP's strategy and pursue our growth agenda," said Craig, who was appointed in March but won't begin his role until 1 September.

"As incoming CEO, I look forward to leading the talented people who make BHP a great company and I am confident that the new appointments will support BHP's progress in strategy, operating performance, growth and our differentiated approach to social value creation - all in support of strong long-term shareholder returns."
