BAE to shed 1,775 jobs in Scotland and Portsmouth

BAE Systems will cut a total of 1,775 jobs at its shipyards in Scotland and Portsmouth in the next three years. The defence conglomerate revealed these numbers in discussions with unions, with 835 jobs going in Glasgow and Fife, and a further 940 staff posts and 170 agency workers removed at Portsmouth.BAE said it hoped to make the cuts through voluntary redundancies and early retirement, while looking to avoid compulsory redundancies by re-training or offering job transfers to other departments.Shares in BAE were up 1.4% at 453.3p at close on Thursday.
