AMEC wins £150m contract at BP's Clair oil field

Engineering and project management services (EPMS) firm AMEC has been awarded a £150m contract to provide EPMS for a "giant" Shetland oil field, operated by oil titan BP.The work, which is already underway, is for the main platform design for Clair Ridge, the second phase of the Clair oil field, west of the islands."The award will see AMEC deliver detailed engineering and project management services for the construction and installation phase of two new bridge-linked platforms," the statement said.The platforms are expected to be installed in 2015 and production is scheduled to start the year after."I am proud that our large team of technical experts is helping to deliver the next phase of this pioneering project," said Neil Bruce, chief operating officer of AMEC. "As well as creating hundreds of UK jobs, the development will help to ensure jobs in the industry and the UK's energy security in the future."On Thursday, the UK government granted BP and its partners approval to proceed with the £4.5bn project in the North Sea, one of four new oil and gas projects worth nearly £10bn over the next five years planned by the oil syndicate. This significant investment will also help to maintain BP's production from the North Sea for decades to come, the company said. AMEC said that BP's capital injection of £4.5bn will give access to 640m barrels of recoverable oil, which should flow at a peak rate of 120,000 barrels per day, extending the life of the field to 2050.BC
