Week Ahead: Carnival, IMPs, BoE minutes

Next week looks relatively quiet on the corporate news front. Big guns expected to update the market include cruise operator Carnival, tobacco company Imperial Tobacco and utilities company United Utilities.The second quarter update from Carnival was not well received by the market, as profits fell and third quarter guidance disappointed. Some companies deliberately like to set expectations low and on Tuesday we will see whether Carnival is one of those. Carnival said it expects third quarter earnings to be between $1.43 and $1.47, above $1.33 over the same period last year, but below some analysts' estimates.The third quarter update from IMPs also contained some disappointment. Nomura Securities said the figures released by the company implied volumes dipped by around 5% in the company's third quarter, which was "disappointing for the market given the company had previously indicated that volumes would be stable y-o-y [year-on-year] in 2H10 [second half of 2010]."The company will reveal on Wednesday whether volumes are still on a down trend.On the same day the Bank of England will release the minutes from the most recent Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting.
