(Sharecast News) - Major indices delivered a mixed performance on Friday as big-name chip stocks carried their recent strong performance over into the new year.
At the close, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 0.66% at 48,382.39, while the S&P 500 advanced 0.19% to 6,858.47, and the Nasdaq Composite saw out the session 0.03% firmer at 23,235.63.
The Dow closed 319.10 points higher on Friday, more than reversing losses recorded in the previous session as the blue-chip index wrapped up what was a solid year on a dour note.
Nvidia traded higher on Friday, as did Micron Technologies, as investors continued to back the artificial intelligence trade, which drove the broader market to sharp gains in 2025. Tesla, on the other hand, ended the session in the red after the electric carmaker posted Q4 delivered that fell short of analyst estimates.
On the macro front, S&P Global's manufacturing purchasing managers index fell to 51.80 in December, down from 52.20 in November, marking the weakest expansion in the last five months. New orders fell for the first time in twelve months, while exports dropped for a seventh month in a row, as tariffs and trade tensions weighed on sentiment.
No corporate earnings were released on Friday.
