Traffic up 9% at easyJet in June

The number of passengers flying with low cost airline easyJet jumped over 9% in June to more than 4.5m, helped in part by strike action at British Airways.Its orange liveried planes carried 4.54m people last month, up from 4.15m a year earlier, increasing the total for the last 12 months by 7% to 47.64m.Aircraft were also filled more effectively, with a load factor of 87.2% improving on the 86.3% in June 2009. The 12-month figure rose 1.5 points to 86.7%.British Airways said yesterday that traffic measured in revenue passenger kilometers fell 11.1% in June, damaged by strikes by the Unite union in the first nine days of the month. Passenger capacity fell 8.6% from a year earlier, with 5% of the decline due to industrial action. Traffic comprised a 9.2% drop in premium traffic and an 11.4% decrease in non-premium traffic.
