Support services firm Serco has been chosen to design, build and operate the London cycle hire scheme (LCHS).Transport for London (TfL) handed the UK company a six-year contract worth £140m with a possible two-year extension. It wants to generate an extra 40,000 bicycle journeys every day in Central London.Serco will provide, operate and maintain 6,000 Bikes for hire in the Capital and 400 docking stations offering over 10,000 docking points. The scheme will operate across nine London boroughs, and will initially cover about 44 square kilometers, almost equivalent to the Zone 1 transport area."We believe that, through our detailed planning and careful design, we have a leading edge scheme which is capable of being rolled out in other cities which are facing many of the same transport challenges," said Serco boss Christopher Hyman.
