Rolls-Royce wins thruster contract for drilling offshore Korea

Power systems group Rolls-Royce has won a contract for the supply of thrusters and deck machinery for use in drilling offshore Korea.The contract, worth around £22m to the FTSE 100-listed firm, will see it work on two semi-submersible drilling rigs to be built at Samsung Heavy Industries for Stena Drilling by 2016.Thrusters are used to move rigs to and from drill sites and to hold their positioning whilst drilling. "This contract confirms our solid foot print in the exploration and production market, and we are very pleased that Samsung and Stena Drilling chose to place another order with us," said Anders Almestad, the President of Rolls-Royce's Offshore operations. "Samsung is our largest yard customer when it comes to propulsion and we value our long lasting relationship with them."Rolls-Royce has so far delivered 1,200 thrusters to nearly 200 rigs and drillships, and mooring systems to 25 rigs.
