Malaysian Air Decides On Pratt & Whitney Engines For New A330s

KUALA LUMPUR (Dow Jones)--Malaysian Airline System Bhd. (3786.KU) has decided on Pratt & Whitney engines to power its fleet of 17 new Airbus 330s due to be delivered from next year, Chief Executive Azmil Zahruddin said Monday. "It's going to the Pratt & Whitney (engines)... they are the same engines that we have on our (existing) A330s today," Azmil said at the sidelines of a conference. Pratt & Whitney, unit of United Technologies Corp. (UTX), is one of three jet-engine makers that can power the A330. Rolls Royce PLC (RR.LN) and General Electric Co. (GE) are the other engine makers. Azmil declined to say how much the engines are worth. The airline had in March ordered 15 A330-300 and two A330-200F freighters from planemaker Airbus at a total list price of $3.6 billion. It has options for a further 12 A330s. Deliveries of the new A330s will begin in the first half of 2011. Malaysian Air currently has a fleet of 11 A330-300s and 3 A330-200s. - By K.P.
