Government-controlled bank Lloyds Banking is to axe 4,500 jobs from its IT department, taking the total number of posts cut to over 22,000 since Lloyds and HBOS merged in 2009.Some 4,000 Group Information Technology jobs will be slashed, out of a total workforce of 10,000. Most of the jobs lost are in the UK, though 1,700 will be overseas, predominately in India. A further 554 processing roles in the Group Operations Division are also being cut, consisting of 406 permanent roles and 148 temps.Lloyds said the move followed the integration of IT operations between Lloyds and HBOS."By making less use of contractors and agency employees, it reduces the impact on permanent staff," the bank said. Compulsory redundancies would be a last resort, it added.Offices in London, Chester, Halifax and Edinburgh will all be affected said unions, which also expressed anger that the bank, which is 41% by the government, was shedding staff.Unite said it was "an absolute disgrace" that Lloyds was cutting more UK jobs. The Lloyds Trade Union also estimated that 90% of the permanent roles being made redundant will come from those sites where HBOS staff are based.
