FTSE movers: Miners rise

1st Dec 2009 14:03

Mining shares are strong today with both Fresnillo and Xstrata in the top ten Footsie performers. Xstrata has entered into an agreement to sell its 19.9% stake in Indophil Resources NL to Zijin Mining for A$1.28 a share. Zijin has agreed bid terms with Indophil, whose main asset is a 34.23% interest in the Tampakan copper-gold project in the southern Philippines. Xstrata owns the rest of the project so Zijin will be its new partner in developing the mine. Travel operator TUI Travel announced full year figures today and the share price fell. They were thought to be a solid but unexciting set of numbers and 2009-10 is expected to continue to be difficult. Adjust profits improved from £319.7m to £366m in the year to September 2009. A reduction in capacity helped to improve margins. Year-end net debt was £338m, up from £136.6m one year before. Acquisitions were part of the reason for the increase but late bookings have also had an effect.
