Talvivaara Mining saw its share price rocket into the top spot on the FTSE 250 after it announced that it has reached its production target for 2011.Full year production totalled 16,087 tonnes (t) of nickel and 31,815t of zinc, while fourth quarter production of 4,769t nickel and 10,524t zinc was a new quarterly record. African oil producer Afren also rose after it said its combined end-year production at its Ebok, Okoro and Côte d'Ivoire operations has topped previous guidance. The company said production at the Ebok field, off the coast of Nigeria, has been ramped up to a stabilised rate of around 40,000 barrels of oil per day (bopd). Home Retail was on the up - and by quite a bit - despite analysts indictating that the group may have been one of the worst performing stocks during the Christmas period. Other retailers were also performing well with owners of the Superdry brand Supergroup and Ocado also making gains. Despite a rising gold price both Allied Gold Mining and African Barrick Gold were heading lower. This may be because investors are experiencing concern over rising mining costs and a general fall in gold prices during 2011. Stocks have failed to pick up significantly since August when the stock peaked.
