The US-Israeli war on Iran as cyclical stocks came into play. With the oil price surging to near $80 a barrel on supply concerns oil producers such as Ithaca Energy and Harbour Energy gained. Shipping broker Clarkson also jumped as container prices rose.
Cruise operator Carnival, WH Smith, Wizz Air and SSP were also among the biggest fallers as flights were cancelled and travel suspended.
Personal protection equipment and military helmet maker Avon Technologies also gained.
Energean said the Israeli government had ordered it to suspend production at its floating gas production, storage and offloading facility near the country's coast in response to the war with Iran which began on Saturday.
Shares in Oxford Nanopore Technologies tumbled after the FTSE 250 firm lowered its medium-term guidance.
RHI Magnesita shares tumbled after the release of its full-year results on Monday, as investors appeared to focus on weaker reported earnings and a subdued market outlook despite a second-half recovery driven by cost measures.
Hospitality real estate firm PPHE Hotel Group said on Monday that it has entered into an agreement to repurchase its freehold interest in Park Plaza London Waterloo.
