Shares in Egypt-focused gold miner Centamin leapt today after its fourth-quarter production results smashed expectations. Total gold production from its flagship Sukari project in the fourth quarter reached 91,546 ounces (oz), 8% higher than the third quarter and up 7% on the same quarter of 2012. This also came in much higher than Canaccord Genuity's estimate of 73,000oz. As such, full-year output for 2013 was up 36% year-on-year at 356,943oz, easily beating the company guidance for 320,000oz and the broker's forecast of 338,000oz.Spirax-Sarco Engineering, the manufacturer of boiler and pipeline control valves, rose after it announced it has acquired Bio Pure Technology, a firm which specialises in the design and production of advanced single-use tubing connector systems for the biopharmaceutical industry. Infrastructure giant Balfour Beatty climbed after winning a £154m joint venture contract to transform the London 2012 Olympic Stadium into an all-round multi-use venue.Phil Bentley has started as Chief Executive Officer of Cable & Wireless Communications (CWC), taking over from Tony Rice and prompting a rise in the group's share price. Meanwhile, as on the top tier, miners were taking a bashing as a result of less-than-impressive data out from China overnight. The December Chinese HSBC services PMI registered a month-on-month drop, falling from 52.5 to 50.9. Although this marks growth still, it has nonetheless raised concerns that the country is having trouble maintaining such strong growth. Kazakhmys, Polymetal International, and Evraz all suffered as a result.
