It is a mixed day for Footsie with utilities heading down due to the fact that Severn Trent and United Utilities have gone ex-dividend. Water company Severn Trent is 56p lower even though the final dividend is more than 10p lower than that at 45.61p a share. In contrast, Unitied Utilities is paying a final dividend of 23.13p a share yet the share price has fallen 19.5p. Inmarsat continues to fall after Bank of America Merrill Lynch cut its rating on the shares from "neutral" to "underperform" yesterday. Deutsche Bank has started covering pharma company Shire with a buy recommendation. BG Group is higher on the possibility that the Australian mining tax may not affect BG's proposed coal seam gas project in Queensland.Royal Dutch Shell is higher because of a rise in UK gas prices on concerns about a strike by unions in the Norwegian North Sea - even though the oil giant could be hit by the strike. One of the fields threatened by the strike is the Draugen field operated by Royal Dutch Shell.
