Business outsourcing group Capita leapt on news it has achieved a 'reasonable' level of revenue growth in 2011 and expects this to accelerate this year as the value of new and extended contracts more than doubled. Royal Bank of Scotland was hot on its heels despite having made a fourth quarter loss before tax of £1,976m, versus a loss of £8m the year before. This loss reduced to £1,798m after tax, so the tax-payer is still subsidising the troubled banking giant one way or another. Meanwhile RSA plunged into last place after the insurance giant's profit before tax came in at £613m. This was a gain of 29% on the previous year while the combined operating ratio, which measures claims and business expenses versus premium income, came in at 94.9%, better than the 96.4% achieved in 2010. BATS also took a hit despite seeing revenues rise 3% to £15,399m in 2011. The company said that volumes fell 0.4% during the year, and expressed concerns about various proposals around the world to introduce so called "plain packaging", which BATS argues will play into the hands of criminal gangs which smuggle cigarettes.
