UK engineering and construction firm Costain said it has been awarded one of four places on Transport for London's framework for Early Contractor Involvement and Construction, initially worth 200m pounds overall.Costain said it is working on its first project within this framework: the Hammersmith Flyover strengthening project, worth around £60m.The group added that the full project scope will be defined during the ECI phase, but is likely to involve strengthening the flyover using post-tensioning, replacing bearings, waterproofing and resurfacing the deck, and replacing the drainage. The Hammersmith Flyover is one of London's main routes and is used by 90,000 road users a day.Costain, which has worked on high profile projects such as the Channel Tunnel and London's St Pancras station, said work for Hammersmith will start immediately and the framework for the ECI work will run for four years.Costain Chief Executive Andrew Wyllie commented: "Costain is delighted to gain a place on TfL's framework, and to commence work on the Hammersmith Flyover which is a technically challenging structure and an important part of London's infrastructure."CJ
