LONDON (Dow Jones)--U.K. telecommunications firm BT Group PLC (BT.A.LN) has reached a settlement with U.S. semiconductor maker Broadcom Corp. (BRCM) over a patent, a person familiar with the situation said Tuesday. BT's V.42bis patent, which was issued in 1992, is for encoding, decoding and transmitting data in compressed form. The settlement took place following the issuance of a Re-examination Certificate by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office confirming all claims of U.S. Patent 5,153,591. The settlement terms with Broadcom are confidential, the person told Dow Jones Newswires. No further details were available. BT has sued a number of chipmakers over the same patent. Earlier this month, Taiwanese chip designer MediaTek Inc. (2454.TW) and its wholly owned unit MediaTek Wireless Inc. signed an agreement to settle litigation with BT that would release them from patent infringement claims. BT filed a patent infringement complaint against MediaTek Wireless in the District of Massachusetts on Nov. 5, 2009. -By Lilly Vitorovich, Dow Jones Newswires; 44-0-207 842 9290; [email protected] (END) Dow Jones Newswires June 15, 2010 10:32 ET (14:32 GMT)
