Temporary power supplier Aggreko ha been awarded a contract by Kenya Electricity Generating Company to supply all 140 megawatt (MW) called for in the tender. The contract is for a minimum of 12 months and worth more than $30m.Aggreko said it will need to install an additional 80 MW at its existing site at Embakasi, outside Nairobi, and 60 MW at a new site near Naivasha. Kenya has been forced to look elsewhere for its power as low rainfall has cut output from its hydro electric power stations leading to power shortages. The UK firm has agreed to supply the first tranche of 40 MW within five weeks of the contract becoming effective, and the balance a few weeks later.
