(Sharecast News) - US stocks fell on Monday as higher oil prices and bond yields dampened sentiment, with investors taking profits on the last trading day of August.
Brent crude was up 1.3% at $90.49 a barrel, while WTI crude jumped 2.8% to $85.76 a barrel, after the US and Iran resumed military strikes, damaging hopes of diplomatic progress between the two nations.
Meanwhile, the 10-year Treasury yield gained 3.6 basis points to 4.757%, hitting its highest since January 2025, as inflation expectations increased.
The Dow finished 0.7% lower, with just four of its 30 constituents making gains, while the S&P 500 fell 0.3% and the Nasdaq slipped 0.1%.
"Rising oil prices - Brent crude is back above $90 per barrel on Monday as traders price in renewed hostilities between the US and Iran - combined with a 66% surge in expectations for a September rate hike, is taking the edge off risk sentiment as we end August," said Kathleen Brooks, research director at XTB.
Economic data was thin on the ground in the US, with the only major release being the Dallas Fed manufacturing index, which hit its highest level since the start of 2025. The general business activity index for the regional manufacturing sector rose to 11.6 in August from 1.3 in July.
In equity news, shares in Tesla rose strongly on the news that the company was pushing its Optimus humanoid robot towards factory production. An executive order from the Trump administration banning imports of foreign-produced power equipment used in bulk-power systems also boosted Tesla.
Nvidia also rose on plans to invest $3.5bn in MediaTek, collaborating across AI infrastructure, local AI computing and automotive solutions.
Meanwhile, Amazon fell on reports the FTC was suing the e-commerce giant on the back of alleged misleading advertising practices.
