LONDON (Dow Jones)--U.K. Prime Minister David Cameron spoke with BP PLC (BP.LN) Chairman Carl-Henric Svanberg Friday afternoon over the Gulf of Mexico oil spill and told him it was in everyone's interests that BP remains a strong, stable company, his spokesman said. The spokesman said Cameron "explained that he was frustrated and concerned about the environmental damage" caused by the leak. However Cameron also "made clear his view that BP is an economically important company in the U.K., U.S. and other countries." The spokesman said Cameron told Svanberg it is "in everyone's interest that BP continues to be a financially strong and stable company." Cameron is due to discuss the oil spill with U.S. President Barack Obama in a telephone call on Saturday amid concerns in the U.K. over the U.S. administration's recent attacks on BP. Svanberg met earlier Friday with U.K. Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne and other senior officials. The spokesman said Svanberg assured Cameron that BP will do everything possible to stop the oil spill, "clean up the damage and meet all legitimate claims for compensation." -By Laurence Norman, Dow Jones Newswires; 44-207-842-9270; [email protected] (END) Dow Jones Newswires June 11, 2010 12:18 ET (16:18 GMT)
